Round Square Service Project 2018

Overview

King’s Academy, in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity International in Jordan, is offering an opportunity to participate in a hands-on service project taking place in Ajloun, Jordan from April 1 to 7, 2018.

The project work includes carrying building materials, mixing mortar, laying bricks and bending rebar. The teams will spend three nights at a community center in the village. The service project will also include a sightseeing trip to Petra, one of Jordan’s most famous historic sites, the capital city Amman, the Dead Sea, and Ajloun Castle, as well as a nature hike through Ajloun Forest Reserve.

Tentative Program

Sunday, April 1 (Palm Sunday)

  • International participants arrive at Queen Alia International Airport (near Amman), and settle into hotel in Madaba
  • Tour of city of Madaba (pending arrival time - we recommend early arrival)

Monday, April 2

  • Visit King’s Academy en route to service project site
  • Visit Amman’s ancient Roman Theater followed by a traditional lunch
  • Travel by bus to Ajloun (1.5 hours north of Amman)
  • Visit/set up work site, briefing, settle in

Tuesday, April 3 to Friday, April 6

  • Daily from 09:00 to 13:30: service project work
  • Afternoon activities from 15:00 to 19:00, including: visits to the Soap House and Biscuit House, hike in Ajloun Forest Reserve, visit Wild Jordan Nature Center and eco-lodge
  • On April 6, work until noon
  • Pit-stop at the Dead Sea on the way back to Madaba
  • Check back in to hotel in Madaba

Saturday, April 7

  • Early departure (06:30) to Petra World Heritage Site (full-day trip)
  • Arrive back at hotel (around 18:00)
  • Pack

Sunday, April 8 (Easter)

  • Departure and airport transfers
  • Own program

Cost per person

560 JD (equivalent to US $790).  This includes project fees, accommodation from April 1-7 (inclusive), all meals (from lunch on April 1 to breakfast on April 8).

Delegation size

Five students accompanied by one or two adults.

Ages

16-18.

Visas

Please check with the Jordanian diplomatic office in your country to ascertain visa requirements for your delegation.  Should you require an invitation letter, we will be more than happy to provide you with one.  A photocopy of the passport will be required.

Accommodation

Delegates will be accommodated at a hotel in Madaba on the nights of April 1, 6 and 7. Accommodation will be on a sharing basis: adults will share twin rooms, students will share triple rooms. During implementation of the project from April 2 to 5, teams will stay at a residence near the work site, and rooms will be shared according to gender.

Travel insurance

Delegations are kindly reminded to purchase travel and medical insurance for the duration of their travel.

Vaccinations/immunizations

Please check with your doctor regarding required vaccinations.

Post project

Should you wish to travel around in Jordan or the region, we will assist you with your plans by recommending a travel agency.  Please note that post project activities (other than those mentioned in the program above) are not included in the project fee.
