Mixed results, high spirits mark Parents Weekend athletic events

November 1, 2008

King’s Academy, November 1, 2008—King’s Academy hosted eight different schools to participate in 13 athletic events over the fall Parents Weekend. Every team competed before family and friends, and some teams, such as cross country and girls swimming, competed in their first meets of the season.

For the instructional teams, horseback riding and fencing, parents observed a typical practice where students demonstrated their skills and knowledge of the sport. The day’s end produced mixed results in terms of scores, some teams suffered great loses while others proved victorious. Nevertheless, the school spirit was high and for many it was the first opportunity to compete interscholastically.

Cross country
The boys cross country team swept the top three slots at their first meet of the season on Parents Weekend. Mohammad Foda ’10, Raja Badr-El-Din ’11, and Hasan Abu Kharma’11 set the competitive pace early onand by the halfway mark they were comfortably in the lead. The three runners, joined at the hip for the entire race, finished the 4.8 km race in 17 minutes 45 seconds, almost a minute faster than the forth place runner from Modern Systems School (MAS).

The race started from the Al-Sabah Administration Center and wound through the campus past the Academy Building, the Dining Hall, and the dorms. The course then veered towards the Athletic Center, finally finishing at the stadium where fans cheered the runners to the finish line.

The girls swim team participated in its first swim meet of the season on Parents Weekend. The girls swam a medley of races consisting of individual races and relays varying in distance from 50 to 200 meters. Coach Anna Leinberger viewed the swim meet as an opportunity for each swimmer to practice new strokes and to experience both an individual event and a relay. For Leinberger, the meet was not about winning or losing, but learning how to swim competitively.
