Students revamp Eco Park during winter break

Last month King’s Academy students* opted to do good during their winter holiday when they joined forces with fellow students from Amman Baccalaureate School and the Lyceum School in Pakistan to participate in Round Square’s annual regional service project.

This year, the project took place from December 18 to 22 in Sherhabil Bin Hassneh EcoPark, a nature reserve in northern Jordan, where the group found creative ways to reuse waste materials to help serve the environment. They built a sandpit, wielded scrap metal into artwork, and installed swings and a slide to create a safe place for local children to enjoy. Evenings included a campfire debate session about water scarcity in Jordan and a fun cultural night during which the students displayed their talents.

“The project brought a sense of adventure and achievement to the students, and introduced long-lasting friendships,” said Khaila Sawalha, one of the chaperones on the trip.

A follow-up trip to complete the project will take place at the end of the month.

Sheila Baber ’17 said of the enlightening experience: “It just goes to show how human ingenuity can turn something you might typically toss away into something beautiful beyond its original purpose.”
