Students create class mosaic with local artisans

In an annual Middle School tradition, seventh grade students are creating a mosaic that represents their grade, the Class of 2027, in Humanities class.

The mosaic project concludes the class’ study of “culture, community and place,” using King’s Academy as a case study, and that included a field trip to Madaba to visit St. George’s Church and Madaba Archaeological Park to better understand how King’s is connected to its local community, country and region.

During the field trip, students began sketching designs for a class mosaic that brings those themes together. After producing individual designs, the class voted on one design that, with the help of local artisans from Madaba, they are making using traditional stone materials and methods to display in the Middle School building alongside previous class mosaics.

One of the aims of the class project is to help foster a sense of community among the school’s newest students, to orient them to the mission and values of King’s, and to help them visualize their place at the school through the physical representation of the mosaic.

“In studying about culture, community and place, the students begin by learning about themselves as individuals,” explains Humanities teacher George Morganis, “and how we can come together to create an inclusive community that cherishes one another through our common purpose and shared values.”
