International merit scholarship winner Asser Madanat ’14 has done King’s Academy proud by winning one of the three merit-based scholarships offered to students at the University of Sheffield.

The Advanced Placement (AP) Merit Undergraduate Scholarship is worth 50 percent of the annual undergraduate tuition fee and is awarded on the basis of academic merit.

Madanat applied to about 20 colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and the Middle East – “more schools than any of my students,” said his university counselor at King’s Academy, Janan Sabeh. While he received acceptances from many of his top choices, including the University of Warwick, Madanat settled on the University of Sheffield, where he is currently pursuing a degree in systems and control engineering.

During his time at King’s, Madanat took advantage of the University Counseling Office, where counselors start working closely with students on college applications in the middle of their junior year.

“We spent many long afternoons and O blocks together,” said Sabeh. “He was a very bright student and a phenomenal writer. When he did something, he did it well.”
