King’s Academy bids Austins a fond farewell

King’s Academy held a farewell ceremony for Head of School John Austin, his wife Monica Matouk and their children, who will be leaving Jordan at the end of the academic year. Students, faculty and staff gathered in the Abdul Majeed Shoman Auditorium to celebrate Austin’s nine years of service at King’s.

Sama Zoubi ’19, Sayf Abdeen ’19, Nadeen Jarrar ’20 and Walid Abu AlAfia ’19, as well as a number of faculty, shared their favorite memories and moments with Austin, while Middle Schoolers Samir Tawasha ’24 and Nermeen AlOmari ’23 recited poems in English and Arabic. A commemorative slideshow produced by the Department of Communications and Publications was then shown, before Austin was presented with parting gifts and keepsake books filled with notes from the school community.

An oil portrait of Austin was then unveiled, which will be hung in the school library alongside the portrait of the school’s founding headmaster, Eric Widmer. The ceremony was followed by a lively zaffeh and relaxed outdoor lunch on Commencement Lawn, attended by the entire school. Watch video
