Understanding: Arts and Humanities Perspectives

These presentations explore the nature and effects of COVID-19 through the Arts and Humanities disciplines.

Essential Question
Does Voltaire’s Candide, a Grand Narrative, offer a model for resilience against confusion and suffering?

Voltaire’s Grand Narrative Candide offers a model for resilience: its vision of a universal human experience acknowledges misfortune, but declares that value emerges only through struggle. Might we find models as consolation?

To Do

Watch the video and answer these questions:

  1. Many classic and contemporary texts follow the model of the Grand Narrative. Star Wars, movies based on comic books, etc. What model can you find to inspire you?
  2. What is it in your model—your hero or heroine—inspires you? What traits would you adopt?
