International Parents Reception
August 23, 2019
Every year, the Advancement Office hosts the International Parents Reception, which brings together all our international parents along with our Head of School, Dean of Students, Dean of Academic Affairs, Class Deans and other faculty members. It is an opportunity for international parents to ask their questions, share their concerns and be welcomed to the King’s Academy community. They also get the chance to meet our Parent Council members and ask any questions they have. The reception is usually held the day before orientation and drop off day.
Head of School Convocation and Induction
October 15, 2019
The Convocation ceremony is held each year to mark the beginning of a new school year. This year’s ceremony celebrated a new chapter for the school with the induction of Peter Nilsson as the third head of school, and the most international student body yet, with 48 percent of students hailing from outside Jordan.
While looking forward to a year full of promise, the ceremony also looked back at the origins and early days of King’s. Founding Headmaster Dr. Eric Widmer and his wife and former Dean of the Faculty Dr. Meera Viswanathan jointly gave a preliminary address. Chairman of the Board of Trustees HE Mr. Bassem Al-Salem, who formally inducted Nilsson as head of school, said: “In Peter, we have found a thoughtful and driven leader who will undoubtedly continue the tradition of carrying out His Majesty’s vision for King’s Academy and lead it to greater excellence.”
Symbolizing old traditions under new leadership was the faculty-student procession that carried the King’s community to Commencement Lawn. Nilsson and Al-Salem led the march, followed closely behind by Viswanathan and Widmer, who introduced the processional tradition to King’s 13 years before.
In his address to the attending students, faculty, staff, parents, board members and friends of King’s, including Her Royal Highness Princess Rym Ali, Nilsson extended his gratitude to everyone who played a role in the establishment of the school, especially His Majesty King Abdullah II. He called the founding of King’s Academy “an ongoing act of extraordinary creativity” and invited all in the King’s community to think together creatively about the future of the school and the possibilities beyond the campus gates.
Parent Council Winter Holiday Bake Sale
December 2, 2019
The King’s Academy Parent Council held its annual Winter Holiday Bake Sale, raising funds for the school’s Student Activity Fund.
The Student Activity Fund ensures that students on financial aid have access to the same opportunities available to other students, guaranteeing an equal educational experience for all King’s students. The fund covers, among other things, the cost of sitting for external examinations like the SAT, university application fees and various extra-curricular activities.
The Parent Council’s events committee led the organization of the event, reaching out to all King’s parents for support in either providing food or helping out at the bake sale itself. This year, parents came out in force to help, with some 20 parents volunteering to help at the sale and countless parents sending in one of the largest hauls of food at a King’s bake sale to date. Particularly active this year were Middle School parents, who donated the most food.
A huge thank you goes out to all parents, Parent Council members and the school community at large for making the event a success.
King’s Academy Career Fair
February 11, 2020
In cooperation with the Parent Council, the Advancement Office organized the second annual career fair, which took place in the HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Library. Over 80 representatives of different companies, industries and careers participated at the event — almost double the number of participants at the school’s first career fair — providing Upper School students with an invaluable opportunity to get an up-close and personal view of a diverse selection of careers.
Students took advantage of the opportunity to speak directly with professionals — some of whom were King’s parents or alumni — about their jobs and fields of work, what they need to study to qualify for those fields, what a routine day looks like, how to pursue a business idea and see it through to success, and much more. Whether students knew the career path they want to take, or are still undecided, the career fair provided plenty of ideas, information and inspiration to prepare them for entering the workforce.
Community Receptions in Boston and New York
December 5 and 9, 2019
Alumni, current and former faculty and staff, prospective students and friends of King’s were invited to special receptions to be introduced to new Head of School Peter Nilsson and to celebrate the continued connections made possible by the school.
Community Receptions in Dubai and London
January 17 and 19, 2020
Peter Nilsson also flew to Dubai and London to meet some King’s Academy alumni who work or study in these cities. The London event was held at the Embassy of Jordan and attended by Jordanian Minister of Education HE Dr. Tayseer Al Nuaimi, Jordanian Ambassador to the UK HE Omar Nahar and other Jordanian members of parliament.
