Departments and Courses

Students typically take six to seven classes per semester suited to their course of study and their particular stage of academic development. Each day is divided into four blocks and the school year is divided into two semesters, with mainly year-long courses and a few semester-long courses.

Tawjihi Equivalency

Note: ACT subject tests can be replaced by SAT subject exams.

Students intending to attend a Jordanian university or gain certain professional licenses in Jordan can obtain a certificate of Tawjihi equivalency in lieu of taking the national Tawjihi examination. Some Arab and European countries also require Tawjihi equivalency. To obtain equivalency, students must complete one of the six examination options by the time of their graduation.

Option 1: Six ACT subject tests

Option 2: Four ACT subject tests + one Advanced Placement (AP) exam, OR Four ACT subject tests + ACT general test

To obtain Tawjihi equivalency in the Tawjihi science stream for option 2, students must pass three science subject tests including math.

*At least three of this combination of tests should be sciences, including math

Tawjihi equivalency GPA out of 100 will be calculated as follows:

25% of the numeric grades of the last three years of high school
50% out of the ACT subject test scores
25% out of the AP Exam OR ACT general test

Option 3: Two ACT subject tests + two Advanced Placement (AP) exams*

To obtain Tawjihi equivalency in the Tawjihi science stream for option 3, students must pass three science subject tests including math.

*At least three of this combination of tests should be sciences, including math

Tawjihi equivalency GPA out of 100 will be calculated as follows:

25% of the numeric grades of the last three years
25% out of the ACT subject test scores
50% out of the two AP Exam scores

Option 4: Three Advanced Placement (AP) exams

To obtain equivalency in the Tawjihi science stream for option 4, TWO of the AP exams must be science exams.

At least ONE of the two exams must be from the following list: AP Calculus, AP Physics, AP Biology, OR AP Chemistry.

Tawjihi equivalency GPA out of 100 will be calculated as follows:

25% of the numeric grades of the last three years
75% out of the three AP Exam scores

Option 5: Two Advanced Placement (AP) exams + ACT general test

To obtain equivalency in the Tawjihi science stream for option 5, TWO of the AP exams must be science exams.

At least ONE of the two exams must be from the following list: AP Calculus, AP Physics, AP Biology, OR AP Chemistry.

Tawjihi equivalency GPA out of 100 will be calculated as follows:

25% of the numeric grades of the last three years
25% out of the ACT general test score
50% out of the two AP exam scores

Option 6: Two ACT Subject tests + One Advanced Placement (AP) exam + ACT general test*

To obtain Tawjihi equivalency in the Tawjihi science stream for option 6, students must pass three science subject tests including math.

*At least three of this combination of tests should be sciences, including math

Tawjihi equivalency GPA out of 100 will be calculated as follows:

25% of the numeric grades of the last three years of high school
25% out of the ACT general test score
25% out of the ACT subject test scores
25% out of the AP exam grade

Important notes:

Replacing school grades	Students can replace 25% of school numeric grades from the last three years of high school with one AP exam, the ACT general test, two ACT subject tests, OR two SAT subject exams.
AP Computer Science	AP Computer Science will not be considered for the science stream equivalency, UNLESS accompanied by one of the following AP Exams: AP Calculus, AP Physics, AP Chemistry or AP Biology.
AP Statistics	AP Statistics will not be considered for the science stream equivalency, UNLESS accompanied by one of the following AP Exams: AP Physics, AP Chemistry or AP Biology.
A-Level Arabic	Arabic A-Level is counted as equivalent to one ACT subject test NOT one AP.
AP Studio Art	AP Studio Art is counted as equivalent to one ACT subject test NOT one AP (excluding students who took the AP Studio Art Exam as juniors in May 2020).
AP Microeconomics and AP Macroeconomics	AP Microeconomics and AP Macroeconomics are considered two separate exams.
AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC	AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC are NOT considered different exams but the same exam.
AP Physics I, AP Physics II and AP Physics C	AP Physics I, AP Physics II and AP Physics C are NOT considered different exams but the same exam.
SAT Biology E and SAT Biology M	SAT Biology E and SAT Biology M are NOT considered different exams but the same exam.
ACT Math I, ACT Math II, AP Calculus, and AP Statistics	ACT Math I, ACT Math II, AP Calculus, and AP Statistics are considered different exams.
ACT English I and ACT English II	ACT English I and ACT English II are considered TWO different exams.
The ACT General Test	The ACT General Test is considered a scientific exam.
ACT Subject Tests and SAT Subject Exams	An ACT subject test and SAT subject exam for the same course are NOT considered different exams but as the same exam.
ACT Subject Test and AP Exam	An ACT subject test and AP exam for the same course are considered two separate exams.
