Below is a list of all the pre-conference trips taking place prior to the Round Square International Conference 2014.

Please note the following:

  • Participants in Jordan trips will spend the first night at a hotel in Amman to accommodate varying arrival times.
  • Starting time for all trips is 07:30 the second day in Jordan.
  • Cost depends on size of group and may vary slightly.

Jordan Valley Service Project (Jordan)

Dates: October 1-7

Description:

Service 

Sharhabil bin Hasneh (SHE) Eco Park (building of turtle pond, step construction, general path maintenance, bottle filling --  for use as "bricks" in future park buildings).

Schedule: Arrival on Wednesday, October 1. Overnight in Amman. Drive to SHE on Thursday, October 2. Project begins on Thursday, October 2 and ends on Tuesday, October 7. Clean up at SHE and drive to King's Academy for the conference on Tuesday, October 7.

Groupings: 30 people

Cost: 400 JD per person (price quoted is for 30 people and may vary if number is lower). All inclusive (travel, accommodation, project bricks, mortar, food and fun)

Habitat for Humanity and Music Workshop in the Northern Jordan Valley (Jordan)

Dates: October 1-7

Description:

Service and Cultural

Habitat for Humanity build and a workshop for recycled musical instruments in Al-Mukhaibeh (the northern part of the Jordan valley).

Schedule: Arrival and overnight in Amman on Wednesday, October 1 for all participating school delegations to gather. Departure to Al-Mukhaibeh on the morning of Thursday, October 2 with a visit to the historical sites of Jerash and Ajloun. Arrival in the village of Al-Mukhaibeh and a Habitat for Humanity build for two days, followed by a two-day workshop in building instruments out of recycled material. Delegations will be hosted by the local community. Return to King’s Academy on the morning of Tuesday, October 7 with visits to the historical sites of Um Qais.

 Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Beersheba and Jordan sights (Palestine and Jordan)

Dates: October 2-7

Description:

Cultural

Schedule: Arrive in Amman on Thursday, October 2 and travel directly to Jerusalem (morning arrival in Amman or arrival the evening before with stay in Amman/Madaba at extra cost). Overnight in Bethlehem for three nights with extensive visits to both Jerusalem and Bethlehem. Travel to Beersheba to the Australian cemetery, then travel back to Jordan. Overnight in Amman with visits of sights in Amman and Jerash (northern Jordan). Possibility of first night only in Jerusalem at an extra cost. Yom Kippur and Eid Adha are concurrent with this trip and have influenced arrangements

Groupings: 30 people

Cost: US $600 (excluding visa costs and any additional costs resulting from extra night(s) at the beginning of trip (before October 2), and an optional night in Jerusalem (US $35)).

It is the responsibility of the school to check with the in-country embassy/consulate, for both Jordan and Israel, regarding the visa requirements for the nationalities in the school delegation. It is advised that a multi-entry visa for Jordan may be the best solution, in order to accommodate re-entry into Jordan at the King Hussein/Allenby Bridge.

Trek/Hike Dana Reserve to Little Petra, Grade 3 (Jordan)

Dates: October 2-7

Description:

Adventure

Schedule: Trek from Dana Reserve to Little Petra (grade 3 on scale of 1 [easy] to 5 [hard]). Arrive in Amman on Thursday, October 2. Overnight in Amman. From Friday, October 3 until Monday, October 6 trek from Dana Reserve to Little Petra. Overnight at Rock Camp. On Tuesday, October 7 visit Little Petra in the morning then transfer to King's Academy and conference.

Trek from Humayma to Litte Petra (grade 4)

Schedule: Arrive in Amman on Thursday, October 2. Overnight in Amman. Friday, October 3 until Tuesday, October 7 trek from Humayma to Little Petra. On Tuesday, October 7 transfer to King's Academy and conference.

Wadi Rum Hike and Ascent of Jabal Um Adaami (Jordan)

Wadi Rum hike (grade 1) and ascent (trek) of Jabal Um Adaami (grade 3) -- highest mountain in Jordan

Schedule: Arrive in Amman on Thursday, October 2. Overnight in Amman. Friday, October 3 to Tuesday, October 7 trekking around Wadi Rum with third day an ascent of Jabal Um Adaami (1832 m). Tuesday, October 7 transfer to King's Academy and conference.

Cost: 670 JD (without rock climbing)
          710 JD (with guide -- needed for ascent of Jabal Um Adaami)

Rafting on Ganges, visits of Haridwar, Rishikesh and trek.

Schedule: Arrive in Delhi on September 30. Overnight at Delhi hotel. Wednesday, October 1 Delhi to Haridwar -- rafting, yoga and activities in the region -- return to Delhi on Monday, October 6. Overnight flight to Jordan to conference (flight not included in cost).

Kumbharghar Village Service Project with DAIS Mumbai (India)

Dates: October 1-6

Description:

Service 

As part of this project, you will have a chance to work against the scenic backdrop of Indian villages on building houses for members of Kumbharghar, a village in the state of Maharashtra. From making stabilized mud bricks from scratch to digging foundations and finally raising the walls, you will have a chance to significantly improve the living conditions of our friends in the village.

Schedule: Arrive Mumbai on October 2 (night of October 1-2). Depart Swadeshi on the morning of October 2. From Friday, October 3 until end of Sunday, October 5 do project work. On Monday, October 6, return to Mumbai and take night flight to Jordan and conference.

Istanbul/Gallipolli/Cappadocia Cultural Project with ENKA (Turkey)

Dates: September 28-October 7

Description: 

History and culture

This trip gives students a unique opportunity to explore some fascinating areas of Turkey. The tour starts in Istanbul – former capital of the Byantine and Ottoman empires and the cultural and business heart of modern day Turkey. Students will be exposed to key historic events in Turkeys modern and ancient history – they will visit Cannakale  – where the Gallipoli Campaign, a notable failed offensive by the Allies in World War I, took place in 1915 and consider the events that took place there from a Turkish as well as an ANZAC or British Allied Forces perspective. The tour ends in Cappadocia – another historic region in Central Anatolia in Turkey best known for its unique moon-like landscape, underground cities, cave churches dating from the earliest days of Christendom and houses carved in the rocks.

Cultural Marrakesh with Elaraki (Morocco)

Dates: September 29-October 6

Description:

Culture

Schedule: Arrival in Casablanca on September 29 (Casablanca is the main airport for most international flights. However it is also possible to fly in to Marrakech). Departure on October 6 from Casablanca to Jordan for the conference.

Cost: 12-28 persons: EUR 550 per person
          Fewer than 12 persons: EUR 650 per person

Tea Garden Tour, Cultural Project (Bangladesh)

Dates: October 1-6

Description:

Culture

Learn about the life on a tea plantation and experience being a tea leaf picker for a day. Also learn more about Bangladeshi culture.
